Halo 5 Placement Match Ranking Algorithm and CSR Qualification guide:

Hi there was wondering if anyone her could make a Competitive Rank (CSR) Qualification guide that outlines the criteria the Halo 5 Ranking systems operates with. Since the game has been out for over 2 years now, was wondering if anyone has actually figured out what the games ranking algorithm looks for when you do  your placement matches. I have qualified in Onyx many times but cant get to qualify in to high onyx
(the max rank you can qualify in after your placement match).
For people who dont know what the max rank after your 10 placement games are, I believe it is somewhere around the area of Onyx 1700 to 1704.
I have seen a lot of Top 250 pros who constantly qualify in the top tier and some even ABOVE the MAX placement tier, which to be honest is another crazy mystery!

Would love if some one would shed some light on the following topic.

Qualification Games Placement Algorithm and "WHAT THE GAME LOOKS FOR" to determine your Placement Rank

Hey @Jacrae,
When I initially joined the community I also wondered the same thing, although I kinda worked most of the criteria myself. When discussing this with @Yoku we found out multiple things:

  • There are certain gamemodes whereby it is easier to QUALIFY into a higher rank and others much harder. For example FFA and Breakout seem to be the easiest game modes to get a higher rank compared to something like HSC Slayer or Team Arena/Slayer. Even Swat now is hard to qualify into Onyx specially but it can be done.

  • The rank/placement algorithm is A LOT better than the initial algorithm when the game was first released. 343 industries have made a significant change for the better in this area
  • There are a few attributes the placement algorithm looks for when placing your rank, some prioritized higher than others.

So what does the placement algorithm actually look for when your play your 10 Qualification games:

1.) Who you LOOSE to, or what RANK you loose to. There is a common misconception that the 1st thing the ranking algorithm processes is the HOW MANY GAMES YOU WIN, which is NOT correct. You can
have a total of 10 wins / 10 games and still get placed into GOLD if the only people you have played are BRONZE and SILVER. Alternatively you can also get a lower rank if you loose to a Low Tier Player.
     For Example:
If you win 8/10 placement games against High Diamonds but loose 1 game to a full lobby of platinums and another game to a MIXED Lobby of platinums and golds then then you are likely to get into the
Platinum division. However is you still win 8/10 games against High Diamonds loose 2 games to a MIXED lobby of Diamonds, Onyx, Plat and Gold Players, as long as you lost to an Onyx and the Onyx player
was in opposing team the algorithm tends to be more Lenient (Easy going) and doesnt punish you that hard for it.

2.) So as mentioned the MAIN TIER RANKS (Example: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Plat, Diamond and Onyx) are mainly determined by WHO YOU WIN AGAINST and WHO YOU LOOSE AGAINST and it is definitely  NOT
based on the NUMBER of Games you win. But once you get placed into your MAIN TIER RANK the algorithm now does a 2nd check on what SUB CLASS or SUB RANK you will be placed in for example:
If you were chosen to get placed in the GOLD TIER the 2nd check will determine what level of GOLD to place you in, either:
(GOLD 1, GOLD 2, GOLD 3, GOLD 4...all the way to GOLD 6.)

This subclass is determined by the following:

  • What was your KDA Spread in the game
  • Your Accuracy (The Higher the more likely you get placed in the top end of your main tier for example (GOLD 6, PLAT 6, DIAMOND 6, ect...)
  • Your power up pick ups (YES! This actually has quite the impact on how OFTEN you pickup a POWERUP however, POWER WEAPON Picks ups are not a criteria the Algorithm picks up unless you play HCS)
  • The HIGHEST or LOWEST (Deaths) in your team for one of the 3 attributes: KILLS, DEATHS and ASSISTS.

If you notice during a game if you bring up your scorecard there is small little yellow mark under Kills, ASSIST, DEATHS for certain players. Those markers indicate the TOP 3 players in your team who are leading the stats for that particular attribute, again as mentioned in the last bullet point, this does have a HUGE impact on the SUBCLASS you get placed in your Main Tier Division.

3.) Finally I left the best till last, as this actually helps what you get placed in as your MAIN TIER RANK and Specially useful for WHAT LEVEL ONYX YOU GET! The answer is simple:
Rare - Legendary Medals during a game, medals such as Overkill - Nairs, Clutch Kills are super important, but if you are a person who cant really get high multikills another usefull medal to AIM to get are AIRBOURNE Snapshots as their fall under the legendary category.

Part 2 - High Onyx Placement, Weighting ACCURACY, KDA and POST GAME MEDALS Have on your Qualification.
Now the above post was basically was a introduction to how Halo 5 Guardians placement algorithm works again at a very elementary level, now to get high tier
Onyx Ranks so im talking about Onyx 1700+ ill be going over how to achieve that in this post.
If you can manage to NOT LOOSE to a FULL LOBBY (OPPOSITION) of Low ranked players within your 10 games and do relatively well. The game will now see
what attributes you excelled at in terms of a SUBCLASS LEVEL. Lets say you qualify in the Main Tier of an ONYX Rank, NOW what the game looks for to determine
what level of onyx to put you in within (1500 - 1700) is all based on KDA - ACCURACY - Legendary Medals

K/D/A
After a good set of qualification placement matches, if you HAVE a 1.5 to 2.0+ K.D you are likely to be put in the HIGHER SUBCLASS of the Onyx Division. Alternatively having a neutral or negative KD will still get you into an onyx tier, just the LOWER SUBCLASS.
Now you can still be placed in the HIGHER SUBCLASS if during your 10 qualification games you LEAD your team in the ASSISTS Attribute no matter if you got
still ended up having a negative K.D Spread. So in that sense Halo 5 have really done wonders with the ranking system.

Accuracy
Now this is a huge factor in determining which SUBCLASS of ONYX you will be placed in, generally here is the rule of thumb:

  • <33% Accuracy = is the only stat that can ACTUALLY GET YOU OUT OF THE ONYX MAIN TIER and put your new placing to a Diamond 5 - Diamond 6
  • x̅A >39% (Average Accuracy) = tends to push the algorithm for the LOWEST Onyx Placement of Onyx 1500-1506
  • x̅A > 50% <59% (Average Accuracy) = tends to push the algorithm for the MID Onyx Placement of Onyx 1590-1608
  • x̅A >60% <66% (Average Accuracy) = tends to push the algorithm for the HIGH Onyx Placement of Onyx 1700-1720
  • x̅A >67% (Average Accuracy) = tends to push the algorithm for the HIGHEST Onyx Placement of Onyx 1720+ This needs to be accompanied with lots

        of LEGENDARY MEDALS

High Tier Post Game Medals
This is pretty much self explanatory but high tier post game medals such as LEGENDARY MEDALS like Clutch Kills, Airbourne Snapshots, High Multi Kill Medals
all play a huge role in the HIGHER ONYX Placement you can get.

Below I have attached 3 screenshots of some qualification ranks I got after playing my 10 placement games in 3 different Arena Gametypes:

CHAMPIONS!
Would first like to thank @Dean Zach for taking his time out to respond to @Jacrae 's post in such detail. But I think the one thing you missed out was how much weight does beating just ONE CHAMPION in your 10 Qualification Matches carry on to determining your placement rank.
Ill give you guys a clue, its alot!
Very Happy
Would love @Yoku to go in detail on how much weight exactly does it carry, and what weight LOOSING
to a Champion has.
Thanks guys!

@Yoku you should put your old post on here as well, as there are a few things that haven't been mentioned. Legendary medals also do play a big part in your rank placement. But I guess none of this really matters any more because as of the August Season and up the highest rank you can place is Diamond 3.
@Dean Zach - Also there are a few things that can severely bring down your accuracy for example after the game is over and the 4-5 seconds that it takes to show the victorious spartans emerge (the little victory cinematic) if you are still holding RT or Shoot on your controller, its still registering shots in the game thus bringing down your accuracy. Rockets are also pretty awful when it comes to calculating accuracy because a 100% accuracy in a rocket only gamemode would only be achieved if you get a direct hit. If its a splash damage kill it counts as a miss. Its things like this where the Halo 5 Accuracy statistic / stat counter is complete and utter garbage in my opinion.

@Dean Zach
Shame they now have changed the ranking system where the highest you can qualify in after your 10 placement matches is Diamond 3
Not that ranking matters anymore, or it ever did at all!
